Firearms License Information
Obtaining or renewing a firearms license in Cobb County
  • You must apply for your firearms license in the county in which you are a resident and be at least 21 years of age;


  • In order to obtain or renew a firearms license in Georgia, you are required to be fingerprinted and must undergo a criminal background investigation by the GBI and FBI;


  • The hours of operation are 8:00 am through 4:30 pm Monday through Friday, except for county holidays. You must come in person to the Probate Court by 3:30 in order to complete the application and fingerprinting process. The address is 32 Waddell St., Building D on the First floor.


  • Upon the receipt of the background investigations, if there is nothing that may prohibit the issuance of your license, we will mail your license to you. The background investigations may take as long as three months. The license is valid for five years.


arrow Applicants must bring the following items to the Probate Court:
  • Current identification with current Cobb County Address; (P.O. Boxes are not accepted)


  • $39.25 in cash or money order payable to the Cobb County Probate Court for the license, fingerprinting and mental health records check.
arrow Applicants for replacement license
  • If your license is lost, damaged, or stolen, you should notify the Cobb County Probate Court immediately and you may obtain a replacement. The cost is $5. If your license is damaged, you should bring it with you.
arrow Some Limitations Obtaining A Firearms License:
  • A firearms license cannot be issued to any person who has been convicted of a felony unless you have received a pardon and it expressly authorizes you to receive, possess, or transport a firearm;


  • A firearms license may not be issued to a person who has been convicted of a forcible misdemeanor, crime of domestic violence, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a weapon at a public gathering or at school functions and convictions relating to controlled substances; and


  • A firearms license may not be issued to a person who has been hospitalized as an inpatient in any mental hospital or alcohol or drug treatment center within the past five years. This does not necessarily disqualify the applicant; however, the Probate Court Judge shall use discretion in the issuance of the license.
  • Firearms license cannot be issued to any person who has been convicted of any type of drug offense including nolo contendere and first offender pleas.
